Councilmember Tom Cook Confirms Piʻikea Avenue in South Maui is expected to re-open to traffic on September 12, 2025
KĪHEI, MAUI — Councilmember Tom Cook is pleased to announce that, following more than a year of closure for critical infrastructure improvements, Piʻikea Avenue will officially reopen to the public on Friday, September 12, 2025. This confirmation follows direct coordination between the Councilmember’s office and the project developer.
“The reopening of Piʻikea Avenue is welcome news for the South Maui community,” said Councilmember Cook. “My office has confirmed with the project developer that the road will reopen tomorrow, and I want to thank our residents for their patience and understanding throughout this extended closure.”
Since August 2024, Piʻikea Avenue has been closed to allow for significant upgrades, including new curbs and gutters, storm drainage systems, and underground utilities; key infrastructure improvements needed to support the area’s continued growth.
“I believe residents will be pleasantly surprised by the transformation,” said Councilmember Cook. “These improvements are not just about safer roads; they’re about preparing for the future. With the nearby Piʻikea Phase 1 and Phase 2 housing developments moving forward, these upgrades help ensure that our infrastructure keeps pace with the needs of a growing South Maui.”
Throughout the closure, access via South Kīhei Road remained open under single-lane, alternating traffic conditions. The reopening of Piʻikea Avenue is expected to ease traffic congestion, restore full connectivity, and support safer travel throughout the area.
