Councilmember Tom Cook Issues Statement on Misleading Social Media Claims

KĪHEI, MAUI — In response to recent social media content circulating online, Councilmember Tom Cook who represents the South Maui Residency Area on the Maui County Council is issuing the following statement to clarify false assumptions and reaffirm his commitment to the Maui community:

"It has come to my attention that a social media influencer couple who recently moved to Maui has published videos referencing a 'friend at the city,' a councilmember, and someone named 'Tom.' These vague references have led to public speculation that I am the individual being mentioned.

I want to make it absolutely clear: I do not know these individuals, I have no affiliation with them, and I was not involved in any part of the content they’ve created or shared online.

The tone and messaging in their videos are inappropriate, out of touch, and deeply disrespectful to our community—especially considering all that Maui has endured over the past two years. These types of statements are misleading and harmful, and any implication connecting me to them is false.

As a councilmember, my responsibility is to serve the people of South Maui and all of Maui County with integrity, transparency, and respect. I take that responsibility seriously and remain focused on the real issues impacting our residents.

I appreciate the vigilance of our community in holding their public officials accountable. Let’s continue to protect and uplift what makes Maui so special—through honesty, respect, and aloha.”
