Councilmember Tom Cook Responds to False Claims from Maui Pono Network
KIHEI, MAUI — In response to a recent text message campaign launched by the Maui Pono Network, Councilmember Tom Cook released the following statement to clarify misleading claims about his record and reaffirm his commitment to the people of Maui County:
"In recent days, the Maui Pono Network has launched a text message campaign spreading misleading and false narratives about my record and integrity as your elected representative. I want to speak directly to the people of Maui County to set the record straight.
First and foremost, I do not have a financial interest in LC Hauling. I am an employee of LC Hauling. My primary responsibility is providing estimates for pending projects, and I have always fully complied with the guidance provided by the County of Maui’s Board of Ethics. In a previous complaint, it was determined that there was no violation of the County’s Code of Ethics. I will recuse myself from matters that pose a clear conflict of interest, as any public servant should.
There is an upcoming Board of Ethics hearing on August 13th, and I welcome the opportunity for a fair and thorough review. I am confident the facts will speak for themselves and confirm that I have acted, and will continue to act, with integrity and transparency.
It’s important for the public to understand that Maui Pono Network is not a neutral or independent watchdog. They are a political organization with a clear agenda. They have consistently opposed my work on the Council, produced campaign content, sponsored attack ads, and have provided large monetary support towards my former opponent. Their recent messaging campaign is not about ethics — it’s about politics.
Unfortunately, these kinds of tactics distract from the real issues that our community faces every day.
Let me be clear: I support responsible growth, not unchecked development. Our community deserves infrastructure that keeps up with our needs, affordable housing that prioritizes local families, and policies that preserve our island’s future for generations to come. That’s the work I was elected to do, and that’s the work I remain committed to.
I will not be distracted or discouraged by political attacks. I will continue to show up, listen to my community, and do the hard work required to move Maui forward — with integrity, accountability, and aloha."
